What is Data Science?

What is Data Science, is it Intuition? Statistics and Probability? Algorithm? Process? — According to Wikipedia, Data science is an inter-disciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data.

Understanding Data:

How many decisions do you take every hour? Knowingly or unknowingly we take many decisions. Everything is based on data we have. For instance, walking — Brain has collected all the data and using it, learnt how to walk.

Data is fact. Characters, numbers, observation anything which is fact can be considered as Data.

There are two flavors in data- Qualitative and Quantitative. As name says, Qualitative data deals with characters and Quantitative data talks about numbers. We can also classify data as Structured, Semi Structured and Unstructured data. We shall look into it in upcoming blogs.

Science behind Data:

Have you ever wondered… How come a person standing next to a display screen explains future trends of Share Market? — Data collected in history is used to make these predictions. Data Science is all about extracting knowledge which is hidden in data, making inferences, taking decisions.
